    High school roundup: Greene Devils blank Chiefs

    ROGERSVILLE — Senior Austin Beets scored a pair of goals to lead Greeneville to a 6-0 win over Cherokee in District 2-AA soccer action on Tuesday (April 16) at Mike Sivert Field.

    Beets had one of four first-half goals for the Greene Devils. Seniors Brody Inscore and David Fisher and freshman Jude Dyer each added a goal in the opening half.

    Senior Connor Stayton scored two minutes into the second half to make it 5-0. Beets tacked on his second goal of the night at the 55-minute mark to close out the scoring.

    The Chiefs were scheduled to travel to Claiborne on Thursday (April 18) and Cosby on Friday (April 19). They’ll play at Grainger on Tuesday (April 23) and at Volunteer on Thursday (April 25) to wrap up conference play.

    Oak Hill 7, Volunteer 6

    CHURCH HILL — Volunteer and Oak Hill Academy put up 13 goals in a nonconference soccer battle on Monday (April 15). The Falcons were down four goals before closing the gap.

    “There’s no quit in this bunch,” said Volunteer coach Jeff Lukens.

    Cameron Cox had three goals and two assists for Volunteer. Braelynn Bradley had two goals, and Diego Mejia scored one. Evan Wilder had two assists in the game.

    Volunteer also picked up a district win over Claiborne by forfeit this week. The Falcons are scheduled to travel to Grainger on April 18. They’ll play at Greeneville on Tuesday (April 23) and host county rival Cherokee at Volunteer on Thursday (April 25) for senior night.

    HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS

    East 6, Volunteer 3

    BLUFF CITY — The Volunteer girls tennis team swept the doubles matches, winning all three pro sets in Tuesday’s 6-3 loss to Sullivan East. The Patriots won the boys match, 9-0.

    Reese Turner and Kendal Shultz, Katelyn Pavlock and Bayley Jones, and Gracie Barner and Madelyn Lawson all won their doubles matches. Abigail Wells and Jolee Dalida won the extra doubles set as well.

    Three girls — Pavlock, Jones and Barner — came close to winning their singles matches as well.

    East 9, Volunteer 0

    BLUFF CITY — On the boys side, Kelton McAmis came close to winning his singles pro set (5-8) with most games going to deuce. Ethan Vaughan and Matthew Carter also battled hard in their doubles pro set (5-8) with most games going to deuce.
