Big Lots, LL Flooring to close stores in Salinas. What to know about gift cards, sales

Salinas shoppers will soon have two less retailers to frequent for home fixtures and fittings.

LL Flooring and Big Lots are set to close dozens of stores across the country, including locations in Monterey County.

LL Flooring

LL Flooring, previously Lumber Liquidators, announced it will close 94 stores, including 30 in California, after filing Chapter 11 bankruptcy in a Delaware court on Sunday. On the closure list is the Salinas location at 1043 N. Main St.

The company has more than 300 stores nationwide.

LL Flooring said it will stop accepting gift cards at all of its locations, including the ones that aren't closing, on Sept. 4 as a part of the bankruptcy process and that gift cards cannot be exchanged for cash. The company said in the filings that it has approximately $131 million in outstanding gift cards.

Liquidation sales are currently underway at the Salinas LL Flooring location, according to its website.

Big Lots

Big Lots at 370 Northridge Mall in Salinas is also slated to close.

The discount chain, a one-stop destination for bargain home furnishings and supplies, announced it would close about 300 locations across the United States, in two separate SEC filings. Big Lots locations in Watsonville and Gilroy are also slated to close.

In a statement to USA Today, the planned closures represent underperforming stores.

The big box retailer reported in May that first quarter earnings fell more than 10% compared to the previous year.

The company's store locator tool lists 1,389 locations currently in operation.
