    Raiders are still good, but want to be great again

    F or as long as anyone can remember, the Richmond Raiders have been one of the most formidable teams in the state. Richmond won its first state championship in 1978 and has won six more since. The Raiders carried the winning tradition forward into the first year of the Sandhills Athletic Conference, when the team went undefeated in conference play in the fall of 2021 and finished 10-2.

    However, the past two seasons have brought rougher sledding for the proud program, which lost its top-dog status in the league to longtime rival Pinecrest. Richmond finished third in the league in 2022 and second in 2023, but had a losing overall record of 5-6 in both campaigns.
