    FRACKVILLE – Borough and township officials have settled who is responsible for maintaining a traffic island along the municipal boundary here.

    The island in question, at Route 61 and Altamont Boulevard, is where the Welcome to Frackville sign once stood. Frackville Borough Council said earlier this month that it will be returning.

    Council also voted to approve a rotating maintenance schedule between the borough and West Mahanoy Township.

    Frackville will maintain the island during even-numbered years, beginning this year, and West Mahanoy in odd-numbered years.

    West Mahanoy Township Supervisors Chairman Paul “Pepper” Martin told the Sentinel Thursday the two entities worked out an agreement.

    The sign and area had been the subject of debate as recently as the fall.

    Foliage around the sign’s location made it difficult for vehicles coming off Altamont Boulevard onto Route 61 to see cross traffic coming from the borough.

    In other business, council approved:

    • the hiring of necessary pool managers, lifeguards, and concession stand workers;
    • appointing Kim Phillips as pesticide applicator for the borough pool;
    • Kim Phillips as an additional signatory on the borough’s 150th account;
    • an ordinance to add a stop sign on N. 4th Street at West Frack;
    • a temporary stop sign at Third and Frack;
    • temporary no parking signs in the unit block of South Stevens and unit block of New;
    • Lunch with the Police at Memorial Park on June 9, rain location of the municipal building gym;
    • the purchase of battery powered emergency stop signs for the traffic light intersections along Lehigh and Oak;
    • a paving project in the municipal building parking lot for $2,850;
    • a landowner-grantee agreement with the Schuylkill Conservation District in support of a grant application for a project downstream from South Third ending at Elm;
    • the pursuit of eminent domain proceedings to acquire blighted properties at 445 West Pine and 443 West Walnut;
    • the use of the municipal building by the American Legion for a meeting;
    • the hiring of Bryce Dragna as a full-time police officer.
