GORDON – The ongoing efforts to build a veterans memorial park at the site of the old Gordon schoolhouse received a sizable boost lately.

UFP Gordon helped raise $11,017 for the Gordon AMVETS.

“Because of all the efforts from the UFP fundraiser, other local companies have been inspired to contribute to this project as well,” said Lew Kaufman, AMVETS post vice commander.

The UFP fundraiser was supported by Marlin Markets, the AMVETS, the Citizens Fire Co. of Gordon, and the UFP Foundation.

The funds raised will go towards the veterans memorial park.

Mayor George Brocious said at Monday’s borough council meeting that renderings have been received from Miller Bros. Construction, who donated the effort. The plans are not finalized yet and would likely be revised.

As planned, there would be a walkway leading to a circular paved area with monuments and inscriptions honoring the branches of the U.S. military. There will also be a pavilion and a lighted flagpole.
