A 20-year veteran of Pitt County recreation has been named the director of the county’s newly formed parks and recreation department.

Jennifer Lanier-Coward, who held multiple positions with Pitt County Community Schools and Recreation, will formally assume the role Sept. 16, according to Pitt County government.

“Jennifer has extensive experience and demonstrated commitment to leading and enhancing community recreation opportunities. She will be a tremendous asset to Pitt County’s team as we strive to improve the quality of life for all residents through expanded recreational programs and facilities,” said County Manager Janis Gallagher, who appointed Lanier-Coward.

Lanier-Coward has been employed by Pitt County Schools since 2004, serving as recreation coordinator and later as assistant director of Pitt County Community Schools and Recreation before becoming associate director in 2018. She has been an integral part of Senior Games and youth sports programs in Pitt County, the county said.

Lanier-Coward will serve as the principal adviser to the county manager, Board of Commissioners and advisory council on parks and recreation issues, activities and opportunities, according to the county.

She will be tasked with planning and directing an expanding and flexible program of recreational activities and events throughout the entire county for diverse groups, ages, abilities and interest levels of the community. She will be responsible for the overall management and supervision of the department.

“Through visionary leadership and collaborative efforts, we will shape a dynamic recreational landscape that enhances the quality of life for all citizens in Pitt County,” Lanier-Coward said.

She received her bachelor’s degree in athletic training from North Carolina Central University and her master’s degree in exercise and sport science-sport management from East Carolina University.
