NEW BEDFORD — Two occupants of a car traveling on Interstate 195 in New Bedford have died, with another three transported to the hospital after a crash Friday morning, according to Massachusetts State Police.

Around 9:35 a.m., MSP gave response from the Dartmouth Barracks to reports of a motor vehicle crash on I-195 East in New Bedford, near Exit 24A, according to an email from MSP Interim Director of Media Relations Tim McGuirk.

"The crash remains under investigation by the Bristol County Detective Unit as well as the State Police’s Crime Scene Services Section and Collision Accident Reconstruction Services," the email reads. "Preliminary information indicates that a vehicle carrying five (5) individuals rolled over. Two (2) of the occupants were pronounced dead on the scene as a result of their injuries and three (3) others were transported to a local hospital."

Authorities shut down the middle and right lanes of the highway while investigating on scene for safety. As of 3:02 p.m., when McGuirk's email was received, the investigation was reported to be ongoing.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
