Dyshekia Strawberry has been appointed by Gov. Wes Moore to fill a vacancy on Talbot County’s Board of Education.

She was sworn in at the Talbot County Education Center during the Board of Education’s meeting on Wednesday. Strawberry, who resides in Easton and has two children in the school district, said she’s “grateful” and “honored” to serve on the board.

“It is fitting for me to be able to have direct knowledge and access to policies, procedures, strategic planning and programs that could be significant for the education of our students,” Strawberry said.

Strawberry was appointed to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of Jymil Thompson from the District 1 seat. Thompson resigned from his position after being named the interim superintendent of Dorchester County Public Schools earlier this year. In June, he was selected by the Dorchester County Board of Education to remain in the superintendent role.

Strawberry expressed three areas she hopes to focus on as she assumes a seat on the board.

“One is safety amongst the students in all of the schools,” she said. “Secondly would be sufficient and adequate staffing for our children to be able to succeed in their learning. And thirdly is preparing our community, our neighbors and families of our students to be equipped to support their children educationally as they attend school.”

Strawberry is a dedicated healthcare professional with over 15 years of experience in patient care, nursing leadership and nursing education, according to a press release from Talbot County Public Schools.

She holds a Bachelor of Science in nursing from Hampton University; a Master of Science in nursing, adult and community health from Wesley College; and a post-masters certificate in nurse leadership from Wilmington University.

In addition to her work in nursing leadership, Strawberry is an adjunct professor and mentor for nursing students at the University of Maryland Global Campus. She is an entrepreneur, managing independent businesses as a delegating nurse and as a real estate investor.

She is a member of the American and Maryland Nurses Associations and has served on committees, performed research and delivered presentations focused on a broad range of health care initiatives.

“I am committed to leveraging my expertise and professional experience to enhance the educational landscape of Talbot County and to ensuring a bright future for all students,” Strawberry said in the press release. She will serve until a successor is elected during the next congressional election in 2026.
