Shrek, the famed green ogre, is coming to the Southern Tier.

Shrek: The Musical” will be taking the stage in Elmira and Binghamton in early May.

Elmira will welcome Shrek, Donkey, Princess Fiona and the rest of the cast first, with shows at the Clemens Center set for May 7-8. The production will then travel east to the Broome County Forum Theatre for May 9-10 performances in Binghamton.

Shows start at 7:30 p.m. Showtime is two hours with a 20-minute intermission. The musical is recommended for ages 10 and up.

Tiffany Hager, digital marketing manager at the Clemens Center, said Shrek came to Elmira once before a few years ago and was a big hit with audiences.

“Shrek: The Musical” marks the final Broadway show of the season at the Clemens Center. It’s also the last show this spring at the Forum Theatre in Binghamton. Ticket prices vary by seating level and venue.

“Shrek: The Musical” is based on the DreamWorks animated film. The original Shrek movie was released in 2001 with characters voiced by Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz and John Lithgow. It grossed nearly $500 million at the box office, won the inaugural Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, and spawned several sequels and spinoffs.

“Shrek: The Musical” is currently on a nationwide tour that concludes in December in San Jose, California. Additional shows in New York state are scheduled for May 11-12 at Rochester’s West Herr Auditorium Theatre and May 16-19 at the Shea’s Performing Arts Center in Buffalo.
