Man was in SC for a job, but died there instead, coroner says. Here’s what happened

A man recently drowned to death at a South Carolina lake, according to the Oconee County Coroner’s Office .

Gustavo Ivan Hernandez-Cardenas, a 30-year-old from the San Luis Potosi region of Mexico , is the man who died in what Coroner Karl Addis called an accident.

On Aug. 17, Hernandez-Cardenas was with friends during an outing at Devil Fork State Park on Lake Jocassee , Addis said in a news release. That’s in the Upstate region of South Carolina, near the state line with North Carolina.

At about 5:30 p.m., emergency responders went to the lake where a drowning had been reported, according to the release.

Hernandez-Cardenas had been pulled from the lake by bystanders, some of whom were performing CPR, the coroner’s office said. When they arrived, emergency responders continued the resuscitation efforts and Hernandez-Cardenas was taken to the emergency department at Prisma Greenville Memorial Hospital, where he died at 10:10 p.m., according to the release. The hospital is about 40 miles from Devils Fork State Park.

No other injuries were reported.

Information about what happened leading up to the drowning was not available.

Hernandez-Cardenas reportedly was in South Carolina to attend training at the BMW plant in Greer , Addis said.

Lake Jocassee touches both Oconee and Pickens counties as it covers 7,500 acres with 75 miles of shoreline and has a maximum depth of about 351 feet, according to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources .
