Ashley Stack is standing along South Ocean Boulevard taking pictures of an unusual wall.

The wall, located in the Windy Hill section of North Myrtle Beach, is covered in trinkets, statues, signs and other items that are embedded or jutting out from the stone.

It is the work of Jim and Jodi Winter, who created the wall at 4502 S. Ocean Blvd., as a way to give back to the community.

“This is a destination town and we tried to make something that’s fun for people to enjoy while they’re here,” Jim said.

It has been called the “Windy Hill Wall” and has drawn attention from both residents and vacationers.

Indeed, when asked where the wall might be, a local resident smiles and easily points out where the wall is located.

Stack, of Eden, North Carolina, is staying at the property and is amazed by Winter’s efforts.

“The owners have made our stay,” Stack said. “The wall is so cool.”

Jim refers to the creation as a “living wall,” as he and his wife are always adding items to it. They get items from thrift stores, online and from people who want to be a part of the wall.

Looking at the wall, there are mosaic flip flops made by Jodi Winter that look like they are walking across the stone; a marble path that appears to be coming from a fish mouth; random hands; petrified wood; more than 100 pieces of corral; and statues that include pirates, dogs and flowers. There’s even a “Where’s Waldo” character hidden in the wall that can be part of the search.

And at night, there are eyes that glow in the dark.

“We counted 72 smiles in the wall so it’s a happy wall,” Jim said.

Jim has also included 24 treasure boxes in the wall, each filled with an item that a person who finds it can take with them. Once the item is taken, he replaces it with something else.

But the treasure boxes are not easy to find and could be anything, such as a tiny frog that opens or inside a pipe that sticks out from the wall.

Jim is a former plumber and has made use of his skills with the wall.

Jim had a similar wall at his former home in Colorado and wanted to build one here when the couple moved to North Myrtle Beach nine years ago.

He began the wall about four years ago, and it took him several months to build it. And he’s still not done.

“It’s just designed to be a lot of fun even for the family,” Jim said, “and you get to go home with some treasures.”
