A man involved in the Jan. 6, 2021, deadly insurrection at the U.S. Capitol was arrested Wednesday in Horry County.

The FBI confirmed to WMBF that Jason Barrett was taken into custody after executing a federal arrest warrant at a home along Burcale Road.

It is unclear if Barrett lives in Horry County. A message left with the Columbia FBI office was not immediately returned Wednesday.

According to a criminal complaint in U.S. District Court, Barrett is accused of assaulting, resisting or impeding officers; obstruction of law enforcement during civil disorder; entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds; disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds; engaging in physical violence in a restricted building or grounds; and disorderly conduct in a Capitol building.

Barrett’s charges stem from his alleged role in the U.S. Capitol riot, where thousands of people stormed the Capitol building to protest the 2020 presidential election results in which President Joe Biden defeated former President Donald Trump.

The federal complaint says that Barrett was identified by the FBI as one of the alleged rioters in October 2023. He was wearing a dark-green hoodie, brown jacket, a white and blue baseball cap, sunglasses, grey and black Kobalt gloves and blue jeans with rips.

The FBI said that Barrett allegedly could be seen on video footage assaulting a police officer on the southwest corner of the Western Plaza of the U.S. Capitol and then grabbing a Metropolitan Police officer from behind.

The complaint says that Barrett made postings of his travel to Washington, D.C., wearing the same clothing on that day.

The complaint states that around 1 p.m. on Jan. 6, as the mob breached the Capitol, Barrett can be seen climbing a short wall, retrieving a blue “Trump 2020” flag and then helping other rioters over the wall, and making his way closer to the police officers.

As the crowd grew agitated and aggressive toward police officers, the complaint says that Barrett forcefully grabbed a Metropolitan Police Department bicycle patrol officer from behind, wrapped his arm around the officer’s neck and maintained control of the officer. The officer repeatedly yelled “Get off me,” until officers were abel to come and save the officer from Barrett’s attack, the complaint says.
