New Vanderbilt basketball coach Mark Byington has added assistant coach Kenneth Mangrum to his staff, the school announced Tuesday.

Mangrum was an assistant coach with New Mexico State (13-19, 7-9, 4th in CUSA) last season. A 17-year college basketball coaching veteran, Mangrum's previous stops include Troy, Texas Southern, Texas-Arlington, Sam Houston, and Angelo State.

Mangrum played four seasons (1998-2002) as a guard for North Texas. He averaged 5.7 points in 21.5 minutes per game for the Mean Green.

Mangrum will join four other assistant coaches under Byington: Rick Ray, Jon Cremins, Xavier Joyner and Matt Bucklin.

Byington is entering his first season as Vanderbilt coach. He was hired on March 25 to take over the Commodores after the school fired former coach Jerry Stackhouse.

Byington spent four seasons at James Madison and has a 220-137 record over his career. Last season, he led the Dukes to a 32-4 record and an NCAA tournament appearance.

Vanderbilt finished 9-23 last season, then fired Stackhouse on March 14.
