    Spirit Halloween to open a record number of stores this fall. How many are in Tennessee?

    Spooky season just got spookier — Spirit Halloween , North America's largest Halloween retailer, recently announced a record breaking number of stores will be opened for the 2024 Halloween season.

    With over 1,100 locations already open, the retailer plans to open a few hundred more stores before the end of September, the most common time to prepare for the holiday, according to Statista . According to a news release , 1,525 Halloween stores will be opened across North America.

    Spirit Halloween's massive expansion comes as Americans continue spending billions annually on the holiday. According to the National Retail Foundation , the United States spent an estimated $12.2 billion in 2023, exceeding the previous record set in 2022 of $10.6 billion. Consumer spending reached an estimated $108.24 per person in 2023, up from the previous record of $102.74 in 2021, according to the National Retail Federation.

    "Visiting a Spirit Halloween store is more than just a shopping trip - it's entertainment, it's tradition, it's creating moments and memories with family and friends that bring the magic of Halloween to life, and we are thrilled to welcome fans back to the show."

    How much does the average household spend on Halloween annually?

    Per data from Consolidated Credit , the average American household spent an estimated $108 on Halloween in 2023, which included candy, decorations, costumes and greeting cards.

    According to the National Retail Federation, Americans are spending the most money on costumes. Total spending on costumes in 2023 reached an estimated $4.1 billion, up from $3.6 billion in 2022. Decorations also run up a high bill, Halloween decor expenditures reached an estimated $3.9 billion while candy sales reached an estimated $3.6 billion, up from $3.1 billion in 2022.
