OB-GYN Specialists for Women has returned to Franklin after more than a year away and is now operational at 102-A Fairview Drive, providing comprehensive women’s health care for the city and surrounding region.

    Tobi Byrd

Tobi Byrd is representing this OB-GYN organization in Franklin and is the only obstetrician-gynecologist in the city.

She is a certified nurse midwife, a board-certified women’s health nurse practitioner, and she has a Master of Science degree.

OB-GYN Specialists for Women, which is a division of Mid-Atlantic Women’s Care, had previously been located in Franklin at 118 Fairview Drive.

Byrd said, “We’re still the same practice … (as) when we were at 118 Fairview, but we had to close that office last year based on corporate recommendations, and then we finally got approval late last year to reopen here in Franklin, and we’re just in a new location now.”

At 102-A Fairview Drive, “we’re in the hospital medical office building owned by the hospital, but it’s Building 4, and we used to be in Building 2,” Byrd said.

From the Franklin location, Byrd’s service coverage area includes Franklin, Southampton County, Isle of Wight County, Greensville County and Emporia.

“We’re the only OB-GYN between Suffolk and Petersburg,” Byrd said.

She noted that part of the reason the corporate recommendation came to close the group’s old Franklin location was because OB-GYN Specialists for Women had lost two physicians.

“For a brief time, that put us down to just one physician, so that was just a lot of coverage area for him,” Byrd said.

The closure of the group’s location at 118 Fairview Drive Suite 100 came in March 2023.

“Once we kind of got our bearings after losing those two physicians, then we put in a proposal that maybe we need to be back out here in this area, because Suffolk’s pretty far away to go for patients, especially out in this rural, large coverage area,” Byrd said.

OB-GYN Specialists for Women has two locations in Suffolk and now one again in Franklin. Across all locations, the group consists of three OB-GYN nurse practitioners, two midwives and two physicians, including one long-standing employee and one who was just hired and will be starting later this month.

Of the group’s providers, “I’m currently the only one coming out here to the Franklin location right now,” Byrd said. “A handful of them are in the downtown Suffolk location, one of our nurse practitioners is full-time at the North Suffolk location, and I’m full-time out here in the Franklin location.”

The new Franklin location officially opened July 23.

Byrd said the location offers comprehensive women’s health care, including full-spectrum obstetrics, contraception and menopausal care.

“We still, of course, deliver our people at Obici Hospital, because Southampton closed their labor and delivery several years ago,” she said.
