The Tillamook High Cheesemakers boys and girls Class 4A wrestling teams concluded the OSAA regular season with three meets January 30-31 and February 1.

The Cheesemakers won both dual meets January 30 over the Scappoose High Indians at Scappoose High School. The boys squad won 49-24 and the girls won 48-36. The boys were led by defending state champion, senior Bryce Haltiner, who won a match by fall in the 113-pound weight class.

Jacoby Goss (126), Jak Hopkes (120), sophomore Chance Fletcher (138) and juniors Lucas Robertson (144), Sedrick Calahan (157), Koi Smith (190) and Kenny Lopez (285) also won matches by fall. The Mooks, guided by head Coach Rex Metcalfe and assistant Coach Christian Mata, won 10 out-of-14 matches against the Indians to capture the Cowapa League championship.

“It was pretty exciting for us to win our league title this year after losing it last year to Scappoose for the first time in 18 years,” said Mata. “Bryce (No. 3-ranked) and Kenneth (No. 4 ranked) have both been competing well all season and they’ll be seeking to qualify for the state tournament this year. We’re hoping to have some good matches at the regional tournament and hopefully get some wrestlers qualified for state.”

For Lopez, a senior, and Hopkes, a junior, they both qualified for state last season and they’re hoping to advance to the tournament a second straight year.

Tillamook competed at the Special District 1 Regional Tournament February 9-10 at Estacada High School (results unavailable). The top four finishers in each weight class advance to the state tournament February 22-23 at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland.

The Mooks have several other solid wrestlers who were also hoping to reach state, including Devlyn McDonald (195), Jonathan Torres (182), Zafarta Anderson (120), Fletcher and Goss, a sophomore.

Tillamook’s girls, guided by Coach Courtney King, were led by seniors Feliscity Murphy Snider (135), Shayla Hillstrom (130) and juniors Evie Haines (115), Audrey Miller (110) and Bryanna Hillstrom (135) who all won matches by fall. Addison Josi (170), Lindsey Weathers (190) and Jessica Brown (235) each won by forfeit.

The Mooks girls will compete in the Class 4A/3A/2A/1A Special District 1 tournament February 16-17 at Scappoose. The top-four in each weight class advance to the state tourney February 22-23.

Mooks girls lost a dual 51-12 to the Sweet Home High Huskies January 31 at Sweet Home High School. Haines won by a 14-10 decision and Murphy Snider won by fall, giving the Mooks two wins. The Mooks boys also won just two matches against the Huskies, who won the dual 64-6 Feb. 1 at Sweet Home. Haltiner won a match by a 5-3 decision and Hopkes won a match 4-3.
