Moose Lodge hosting Float Down watch party

The Moose Lodge is hosting a party for members and friends to enjoy the sights and sounds of today's Float Down.

The lodge, 3520 Military St., opens at 10 a.m. Gary Maas, lodge vice president, said attendees must sign in with a Moose member. There is no coverage charge and food and drink will be available for purchase.

"They come down, they eat they have a good tie and it helps support the lodge so we can help support the community," Maas said. "The biggest reason is so we can help the community."

While you can attend to watch the potential of thousands floating down the St. Clair River and enjoy a band, the lodge will not be permitted as an exit for floaters unless it is an emergency.

"Parking is limited along with seating. Everything is first come first serve so if you want a spot, you need to be here early. Carpooling is highly encouraged. Proper ID and attire is required (shirts, shoes, swimsuit cover-ups)," according to a Facebook event page for the party.

The unsanctioned Float Down starts floaters at Lighthouse Beach in Port Huron and ends 7.5 miles south at Chrysler Beach in Marysville.

Coast Guard officials have urged residents not to participate in the event.

Maas said the Port Huron lodge is the largest in the state with about 3,050 members. He said anyone interested in joining can walk in and ask for an application and a sponsor.
