    DJ N.A.B.S and Crystal Taylor to be honored at Bimbe Festival

    DURHAM – Durham Parks and Recreation announces Youtha Fowler, professionally known as DJ N.A.B.S, and Crystal Taylor as the recipients of the prestigious Homegrown Hero Award.

    This recognition is bestowed upon individuals who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to their local community through acts of bravery, leadership, philanthropy and innovation that positively impact the lives of others. DJ N.A.B.S and Crystal Taylor exemplify the spirit of service and dedication to community betterment, making them deserving recipients of this esteemed award.

    Internationally renowned DJ and entertainer, DJ N.A.B.S, affectionately known as "the DJ who toured with Michael Jackson," has left an indelible mark on the entertainment industry through his creative and visionary work. Born and raised in Durham, N.A.B.S began his musical journey at a young age, later becoming a pioneer in the industry with his innovative contributions. From his early days playing the saxophone in junior high to his legendary career as a DJ and producer, DJ N.A.B.S has continuously pushed boundaries and inspired others with his passion for music and community.

    Crystal Taylor, founder and CEO of The Underground Collective and Beats n Bars Festival, has been instrumental in preserving and promoting Black music, culture, arts and humanities in Durham.

    Through her nonprofit organization, Get Happy, Taylor works tirelessly to enhance the quality of life for people of color by advocating for health and wellness initiatives, innovative education and community-driven engagement. Her dedication to empowering communities and addressing social issues has earned her widespread recognition and admiration. Born and raised in Clinton, North Caroline, Crystal is a fourth-generation farmer and a co-founder of The Black Farmers Market and Black August in the Park.

    "DJ N.A.B.S and Crystal Taylor exemplify the best of Durham," said Rukea Womack, interim assistant director, Community Recreation Services Division. "Their unwavering commitment to service, leadership and community empowerment is truly inspiring."

    Join Durham Parks and Recreation in celebrating DJ N.A.B.S and Taylor at the 54th annual Bimbé Cultural Arts Festival May 18 at Rock Quarry Park. The festival is free for all ages and begins at 1 p.m. until 7 p.m. Visit www.dprplaymore.org
