Election guide 2024: Many uncontested races in Morro Bay, Los Osos and Cambria

November is just around the corner, and ballots will soon land in mailboxes around San Luis Obispo County.

On the North Coast, numerous candidates are running unopposed — including the Morro Bay mayor and quite a few community services district directors. In Los Osos, no one even applied to fill the two open seats on the town’s CSD board.

Still, voters will have the chance to weigh in on school board races and ballot measures.

Here is a list of candidates who will appear on North Coast ballots for the November election.

    Morro Bay City Council

Morro Bay residents will not see a City Council race on their ballots this November.

Mayor Carla Wixom is running unopposed, and she will be appointed to keep her seat.

Meanwhile, Councilmembers Laurel Barton and Jen Ford did not file paperwork to run for re-election. Businessman Jeff Eckles and sales associate Bill Luffee will be appointed to fill those two open seats.

Morro Bay voters will get their share of election excitement, though.

Ballots in the city will include the hotly contested Measure A-24, which would freeze the land use on the Morro Bay Power Plant property in an attempt to block the battery plant proposed for the site.

    Los Osos Community Services District

The Los Osos Community Services District Board of Directors will eventually appoint two people to fill two open seats on the board.

Director Troy Gatchell, who holds the District 3 seat, and Director Marshall Ochylski, who holds the District 5 seat, will not run for re-election this fall.

No one filed paperwork to run for either seat, so the board will appoint its two new members, according to CSD general manager Ron Munds.

The CSD is working with the San Luis Obispo County Clerk-Recorder’s Office to outline the timeline for the appointment process, he said.

The board will likely discuss the process at its next meeting on Sept. 5, Munds said.

    Cambria Community Services District

Three incumbents signed up to continue serving on the Cambria Community Services District , and all three will be appointed to their seats without appearing on the ballot.

They are Harry Farmer, Karen A. Dean and Tom Gray.

    Cambria Community Healthcare District

In Cambria, three people will be appointed to fill three open seats on the Community Healthcare District board.

They are health care consultant Cecilia Montalvo in Division 1 and Bruce Mumper in Division 5, along with Igor Fedoroff for a partial term in Division 3.

Cambria residents also will have the chance to vote on Measure C-24, which if passed would raise money to replace the ambulance station .

The measure aims to raise funds to “replace the 67-year-old ambulance station and healthcare facility to meet current county codes and standards and improve safety and security for residents, emergency responders and visitors,” the measure text said. If passed, the measure would allow the Cambria Community Healthcare District to secure $5,900,000 of bonds at legal rates, which would generate $423,300 per year at rates of $7.90 per $100,000 assessed value, the measure said.

    San Simeon Community Services District

In San Simeon, Hoa “Holly” Le is running unopposed for the open seat on the Community Services District board and will be appointed to the seat.

    Cayucos Elementary School District

Cayucos residents will have the opportunity to chose between two candidates for an open seat on the Cayucos Elementary School District board.

    Governing Board member TA5

    • Dan W. Puett, teacher and parent
    • Susan Brownell, current trustee and parent

    Cayucos Sanitary District

Cayucos residents will also get to vote on one contested race for the Cayucos Sanitary District board, while unchallenged incumbents Hannah Miller and Robert B. Enns will keep their seats.

    Division 2 director

    • Justin T. Smith, water treatment operator
    • Michael Shopshear, did not list a profession

    Coast Unified School District

Three uncontested candidates will be appointed to three open seats on the Coast Unified School District board. They are educator Christine Amato Quinn, businessperson and parent volunteer Lisa Weseman and parent and entrepreneur Nic Johnson.

San Luis Coastal Unified School District

The San Luis Coastal Unified School District features one contested race, while current board member Chris Ungar and parent and local businessman Brian Clausen will be appointed to two other open seats.

    District 6
