    Special Olympics Torch Run Comes Through Crescent City

    The Special Olympics Northern California Del Norte teams carried the Flame of Hope, this past Tuesday morning from the parking lot of Ocean World to the Crescent City area California Highway Patrol Office. Law enforcement teams made an intermediate stop at the Del Norte Sheriff’s office.

    Teams of runners from Pelican Bay State Prison, Del Norte Sheriff, Crescent City Police and the CHP, along with families, lots of supporters and Special Olympians carried the Torch to bring awareness and raise funds for the Special Olympics held in Richmond, Virginia earlier this month.

    Runners sported Guardians of the Flame T-shirts. Participants raised funds in support of numerous Special Olympics programs. 110,000 law enforcement personnel from hundreds of local agencies carrying the Special Olympics Flame of Hope throughout the world. The Flame of Hope will culminate at the Summer Games, June 28-30 at Santa Clara University, where an estimated 1,000 athletes and coaches from 30 plus countries will compete.

    The Flame of Hope is enroute to Santa Clara, through Humboldt, Mendocino, Sonoma, Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo and Santa Clara ccounties.

    The Special Olympics Northern Californua (SONC) is dedicated to enriching the lives of children and adults with intellectual disabilities through inclusive sports, education, leadership and health programs. The 501(c)3 non profit organization offers free year round training and competition programs for over 26,000 athletes who compete in nearly 400 competitions, annually.
