“Mine you ask … Oh I just woke up to my vehicle almost being towed in my driveway.”
“One of the guys was inside my car looking for the keys when I walked outside,” she continued.
“I bought my car outright and definitely don’t owe anything on it,” she continued.
“All they said was that they were sent for a Silver Ford Escape.”
“Please make it make sense,” she concluded.
In the comments section, Pierce also uploaded a video of herself explaining what was going on.
“This is sketchy,” one person commented.
“I would have called the police,” a second person suggested.
“That’s incredibly stupid and irresponsible or theft.”
“Patsy go ahead call police it was probably just a thief and they may get someone else or come back,” a third person urged adding that they would be able to identify the person by their fingerprints.
One user revealed that they had the exact same thing happen to a neighbor.
“We almost had to stop one of our neighbors from being towed & it was a mistake! She came outside too & stopped them,” the person explained.
“They drove up so fast I was suspicious!!! So glad u saw them!!!”
What to do if your car is towed
Wrongfully or not, retrieving a towed vehicle can be a hassle.
If your vehicle is towed after parking in a “No Parking” zone or other legitimate reason, there are a few steps to take to get it back.
Steps to take when your car is towed:
Try to figure out why your car was towed. Did you not see a posted “No Parking” sign? Did you miss a car payment? Did you return to a lot where you have unpaid citations? Finding the reason can narrow down the phone numbers to dial.
Locate the vehicle. Most states, cities, or counties require towing companies to leave some form of contact information via a posted sign or sent by mail.
Recovery dates and times depend on the company that towed the vehicle, but those times will be posted to the website or can be recited by a representative.
Pay the fees. Be careful to be as prompt as possible, as some tow yards may charge storage fees by the day.
If you feel your vehicle was wrongfully towed, contesting the action can be done with the following steps:
Be prompt – many states have a small window of time where it’s acceptable to file a complaint against a company that wrongfully towed the vehicle.
Gather supporting documents: photos, emails, receipts, police reports, and witness statements if applicable. The more evidence, the better.
Get familiar with your local laws, as laws for towing companies vary per state.
Try speaking with the towing company. Sometimes it may have been a simple oversight, and the matter can be resolved quickly.
Contact the Justice of the Peace in your area, as they may have more insight or resources to help. They are often utilized for towing cases.
Talk to a lawyer. Many lawyers have free case consultations, and depending on the case, it may be worth it to utilize a lawyer.
Not everyone was as lucky as Pierce to escape having their vehicle towed.
One unfortunate soul in Tennessee was forced to pay $330 to have her vehicle returned.
Corinne Gould was visiting Chattanooga and had her vehicle towed after parking at a Walmart overnight.
The company, Chattanooga Impound, charged her $300 to get her car back.
Gould said she tried to pay the company in cash, but they refused to hand her a receipt.
By not providing a receipt and demanding cash, there’s no way to prove the unjust charge.
“It is really unfortunate that some unscrupulous operators within the tow truck industry have apparently found a rather large loophole in city ordinances that they are taking advantage of,” Gould told ABC affiliate WTVC .
