Unfortunately, not every purchase is a keeper, and sometimes you have to make a return.

Customer Daniel Gaynor explained the mission he went through to return a shower shelf he bought.

The first issue was that 30 days had already passed since the purchase.

Gaynor said the “stupid” policy limited him to getting store credit, which was no good to him since he doesn’t usually shop there.

The real shock came when the cashier asked him for his ID.

“I said now you’re full-blown crazy…total overkill,” he wrote in a Facebook post.

“Never had to show an ID for a measly $18 store credit.”

Another TJ Maxx shopper commented on Gaynor’s post that the store checks IDs to ensure customers aren’t on a “return ban list.”

On TJ Maxx’s website , it says returns without a receipt will receive a non-transferable merchandise credit, though Gaynor didn’t mention that he didn’t have proof of purchase.

A valid government-issued photo ID, name, address, and signature will be required to collect the merchandise credit and may be required to redeem it.

    STORE CHANGES

TJX Companies, the parent brand of TJ Maxx, Marshalls, HomeGoods , Sierra, and Homesense, announced plans to open 1,300 more stores .

“We are convinced that significant market share opportunities remain across the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Australia over the long term,” said Ernie Herrman, CEO of TJX Companies, on an earnings call.

He praised the company’s “flexible and resilient” nature, saying it provides the potential for significant growth.

“Our off-price business model is extremely flexible and resilient, and I believe we are set up for a long runway of exciting growth in our geographies around the world,” Herrman said.

    TJ Maxx return policy

TJ Maxx customers can return items online or in stores.

    Items purchased in stores:

    • TJ Maxx in-store purchases must be made within 30 days of purchase

    Returns by mail:

    • Merchandise can be returned within 40 days of an online order

He also said the store’s “treasure hunt” shopping experience has increased its success.

“We are the only retailer offering a treasure hunt format with good, better, best merchandise across all income and age groups,” Herrman emphasized.

The three options allow customers with various income levels to find items within their budgets.

Another key benefit of the company’s business plan is that stores get weekly deliveries, keeping the inventory fresh for shoppers.

Customers recently slammed Costco’s return policy after someone returned a 15-year-old chair .

Shoppers were equally frustrated with Walmart’s strict return policy .
