KROGER mistakenly overcharged its customers due to an issue during checkout, forcing the store to apologize to shoppers.
The grocery store chain accidentally charged sales tax on food items at some stores in Cincinnati, Ohio.
In Ohio, any food not consumed on-premise, including food bought at a grocery store, is exempt from sales tax.
However, some customers noticed the chain charging extra on their receipt, Fox affiliate WXIX reported.
“We encountered an issue today in which customers were mistakenly charged sales tax on certain food items during checkout,” a spokesperson for Kroger said.
“We resolved the issue and apologize for the inconvenience to our customers.
“The customer service desk or Kroger Customer Service at 1-800-576-4377 is available to assist customers who were charged in error for these products.”
The store did not elaborate on precisely what the issue was and how many stores were impacted.
Kroger shoppers across the country have noticed they were being overcharged for their products.
One shopper noticed they were overcharged eight dollars on a product that should have been two dollars.
"Always check your receipts overcharged for veggies $8 @Kroger gotta go back tomorrow..." a shopper wrote in a post to X.
"8 bucks is a lot for overcharged."
"I bought something that should have been less than $2 it scanned way higher," she added.
One person commented saying they had a similar experience at Walmart.
“I bought a qt of oil. $5 & change. Didn't look at the total or wait for a receipt,” they replied.
“Next morning I checked my online banking acct. & I was charged $121.00. Showed I bought a bunch of food items. Nope. Went back. Got the credit.”
What to do if you're overcharged
If you are overcharged at a retailer, there are a few ways to get your money back.
If you notice you were charged more than the advertised or posted price, report it to an employee or manager.
Make sure to keep your receipt to show the price difference.
As a shopper, you are entitled to the lowest advertised, posted, or quoted price offered by the store.
If you are charged more than the advertised, posted, or quoted a price, report it to the sales clerk right away. If the sales clerk can’t help, speak to the manager.
Stores must honor a posted price, even if the price has expired.
You are also able to dispute charges with your bank if you notice something suspicious on your statement.
Kroger promised to launch a full investigation into a customer who claimed she was overcharged four times for her groceries.
“This is the 4th time as a fry’s deliver customer that i have been overcharged, had instacart people add their groceries to my account,” the frustrated shopper wrote on X.
“And have been charged a delivery fee while being a boost member. I am disgusted that my discounts were not.”
The store apologized for the customer’s inconvenience and asked for her to message them with her information.
“We’re very sorry to hear this,” Kroger replied.
“Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Please send us DM and provide your order number, the email address used to place the order, and your rewards card number/ALT ID so that we can further assist. Please also verify the name on the account.”
