KANSAS City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes’ behind-the-back pass happened because of Travis Kelce’s error.

The NFL quarterback discussed the stunning play after Saturday’s 24-23 loss to the Detroit Lions .

Mahomes , 28, broke out the behind-the-back toss on 3rd-and-3 in the first quarter.

Kelce then got a first down for the Chiefs after an eight-yard gain.

The beautiful connection immediately went viral on social media.

But Mahomes said it happened because of a fair dose of chaos during the play caused by Kelce.

“Long story short, Travis didn’t run the route he was supposed to run,” the two-time NFL MVP said.

“And then it was kind of a behind-the-back pass because I was mad, I was pissed off at Travis.

“He was supposed to run a flat route… he doesn’t run it.

“Out of spite, I threw a behind-the-back pass, but now it’s gonna be a highlight.”

Mahomes has been practicing the behind-the-back pass for a while.

Earlier this year, he said that head coach Andy Reid wanted him to “throw it behind the back more than anyone in the world.”

But the quarterback explained that it’s difficult to pull it off in a game.

“That’s what I’ve been trying to say to everyone. It can’t be planned,” he said.

“It’s gotta be naturally happening in the groove of things…

“It’s not like I planned that at all or anything, it just sort of happened.”
