On Monday, August 26, Mariah announced the passing of both her mother and sister .

“My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend,” she said, via People .

“Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day.”

The singer continued: “I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed.

“I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”

Patricia was an opera singer and a vocal coach who reportedly attended Julliard and sang professionally in New York City .

She and Mariah collaborated on the latter’s 2010 Christmas album.

Who was Mariah Carey’s sister, Alison?

Mariah reportedly shared a complex relationship with her sister, Alison , as well.

She noted in her memoir that it was “emotionally and physically safer for me not to have any contact” with Alison.
