THE fight for the New England Patriots starting quarterback job has turned into an ugly drama, sources tell The U.S. Sun.

The franchise is divided on whether the role belongs to Jacoby Brissett or rookie Drake Maye , putting head coach Jerod Mayo in an uncomfortable position at the start of his tenure as the Patriots boss.

Tensions in New England reached a “sky-high” level with non-coaching staff members trying to influence Mayo’s decision, an insider within the team said.

“Too many people inside the team and the staff — even on the board — are giving their opinion on who should start,” the source said.

The insider described the situation as “very frustrating” with the process causing “many tense, and some heated, arguments” in Foxboro.

“We have to let the coach do the coaching,” the source said.

“Jerod is good enough to make the best decision for the team.

“It hasn’t been the best and most stable environment here to prepare for the new season.

“It’s tense as hell in here.”

The insider noted that the starting QB dilemma has led to tensions both in the locker room and front office.

The organization is split into two camps, one pushing to hand the job to Brissett, 31, and another advocating for No. 3 overall pick Maye, 21, a source from within the Patriots front office confirmed.

“I wouldn’t want to be in Jerod Mayo’s shoes at this moment,” the source said.

“This has to stop, it’s coach Mayo and his staff’s decision to choose who will be the starting QB this season, and nobody else’s.”

The front office insider said those outside of the Pats coaching staff should “stay in their lane,” emphasizing worries about potential consequences if their interference continued.

Making things worse, some people who don’t necessarily want Mayo to succeed are “happy” about the pressure the new head coach found himself in, the source noted.

“We have to show unity, and that is not the situation we are having right now,” the front office insider said.

Brissett started all three of the Patriots’ preseason games, confirming the early speculations that the veteran signal-caller entered training camp as a favorite for the starting QB role.

But after the third matchup, a 17-3 win over the Carolina Panthers , Mayo said that Maye had “outplayed” the ex-NC State standout by the end of the preseason.

“This is a true competition, and I would say at this current point, Drake has outplayed Jacoby,” the head coach said on WEEI on Monday.

While still unable to name his starter, his comments only added to the attention around his choice for the QB1 job.

In a video conference with reporters, Mayo later explained that multiple factors are in consideration when making the final decision.

He noted that Brissett’s overall experience would be weighted in the process.

During his Monday remarks, Mayo said he wanted to make the call “hopefully over the next two days.”
