Who is Dame Sarah Storey’s Paralympic gold medallist husband Richard?

Richard competes in the Paralympic cycling as a sighted pilot, who guides visually-impaired tandem track cyclists.

The cyclist is often referred to as “Barney” by fans, since his middle name is Barnaby.

He is married to Sarah Storey , a Paralympic gold medallist who competes in cycling and swimming events.

Sarah is a 29-time world champion and has appeared at every Paralympics since 1992 .

Richard met Sarah in 2007 and the couple now live in Cheshire.

They have one daughter named Louisa, born on June 30, 2013 and one son named Charlie, born on October 14, 2017.

What is Richard ‘Barney’ Storey’s disability?

Richard was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when he was four.

Type 1 diabetes , also referred to as juvenile diabetes, is an autoimmune disease where beta cells (which make insulin) are destroyed by the immune system.

As a sighted pilot, it is Richard’s job to guide his teammate during tandem races.

When did Richard ‘Barney’ Storey compete in the Paralympics?

Richard competed in the 2004, 2008 and 2012 Paralympics.

He won his first gold at the 2008 games in Beijing and went on to win another for Britain at the 2012 Games.

After he competed at the Beijing Games, he was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2009 New Year Honours “for services to disabled sport”.

Richard has won three golds and one silver medal at the Paralympics.

He won a double gold at the Beijing Paralympic Games with his partially-sighted stoker Anthony Kappes and lowered the Tandem 1 Kilometre world record to 1.02.867.

The sighted pilot then won another gold in the 1 Kilometre Time Trial, alongside Neil Fachie, setting a new world record time of 1:01.351.

They won another silver at the 2012 Games, which were the biggest Paralympics in history, in the Tandem Sprint.

Richard and Antony became the first Paralympic team to hold the able-bodied British National Tandem Sprint Championships title in 2006
