    WHO IS CHARLES WESLEY GODWIN?
FAIRLEA W.Va. (WVDN) – Possibly the local fan favorite of the concerts at the State Fair this year is Charles Wesley Godwin and it will be that way because of his home roots.

Godwin was born in Morgantown, West V,irginia and spent his whole childhood there. He played football for the Mohigans of Morgantown High School and went on to attend West Virginia University where he studied Finance.

While in college, he learned to play the guitar and he would casually practice songwriting. He describes his musical influences as Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, John Prine, Chris Knight and Ryan Bingham.

His debut album, ‘Seneca’ was released in 2019 and was basically a thank-you note to the state of West Virginia where Godwin has never forgotten any part of the mountain state.

His second album was titled ‘How the Mighty Fall’ and was released in 2021. On that album, he was reviewed positively by pundits as they liked how he began to tell stories from other people’s perspectives and not just his own.
Godwin has toured with Zach Bryan, another upcoming fixture in country music, and is featured on Bryan’s song, ‘Jamie.’

Godwin’s third full-length studio album came out in September 2023 and features a personal favorite of mine in ‘Cue Country Roads’ which is a tribute to each time WVU wins a game in almost any sport. Most recently, Godwin was featured on the soundtrack for ‘The Hunger Games: The Ballads of Songbirds and Snakes” with the song ‘Winter’s Cone Gone.’
    WHY YOU SHOULD BUY TICKETS

Support the local (ish) artist. Godwin’s rise has been through no one’s work but his own and he is cementing himself as one of country music’s favorites. A die-hard Mountaineer fan, Godwin is the epitome of a success story of someone born in one of the nation’s smallest states. He tried to walk on to the Mountaineer football team three different times, once under former coach, the late Bill Stewart, and twice under former coach Dana Holgorsen. He spoke to the WVU football team last August in an inspirational manner before the season got underway.
Godwin will perform on Sunday, August 11 and his special guest Muscadine Bloodline will open for him.
