FAIRLEA- The Greenbrier East boys’ soccer team started practice on Monday, August 5 in preparation for the upcoming 2024 campaign as the new school year is right around the corner.

East–two years removed from a Class AAA state championship–once again have their eyes on the big prize as they have turned out in droves and displayed excellent energy the first few days of practice.

“The attitude from the coaching staff has been excited and anxious the players have been in business mode between the lines. I’ve been really impressed, two days in with their attitude and commitment to the process,” head coach Lucas Lemine said.

Lemine is extremely happy with the number of players that will make up his roster as depth should not be a major issue this season. On top of that, several players can play varsity and JV when needed.

“We have 32 total, 17 practicing with the first group and 13 in the second group,” Lemine stated.

“Two goalies and four or five of those 17 will play in both junior varsity and varsity contests and we hope that we can get two to four of the 13 in the second group to the level that’s necessary for varsity by the last week of the regular season. That’s the number we always try to hit and that’s been the number for almost all my tenure. The first group is working on the system of play, introductory stage of that and we look to build on the system and advance it as we grasp the concept and see the process succeed,” Lemine added.

The one-time NFHS coach of the year will use next week to evaluate where his team truly is at this point after they play a couple live scrimmages.

“We have two scrimmages next week (Thursday and Saturday) that we will be using just this introductory stage to hopefully find the successes we are looking for before adding any complexity to the system,” Lemine said.

“The second group is almost entirely working on the technical aspect of the game so we can increase the speed of play. We are at point there that we don’t want to introduce the system until they are at a higher technical level,” he continued.

Although it may take another seven days to begin the evaluation period, Lemine could not ask of anymore from his team at this stage.

“Two days in, really impressed with the level of commitment, lack of complaining about conditioning or simplicity of drilling. They’ve just been putting in the work,” the coach concluded proudly.
