Proposal To List The West Virginia Spring Salamander As An Endangered Species

NOTICE

On September 5, 2024, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced a proposal to list the West Virginia spring salamander (Gyrinophilus subterraneus) as an endangered species under the Endangered Species Act, re-opening the comment period for 15 days.

The West Virginia spring salamander is a cave dwelling semi-aquatic salamander endemic to one cave system in Greenbrier County, West Virginia. The Service also announced a proposal to designate 5.37 acres of occupied cave area as critical habitat for the species, and the availability of an economic analysis on the proposal. The critical habitat is being proposed in Greenbrier County, West Virginia.
