If you saw heavy rain Sunday, you may be one of a few.

While people in East Wichita saw rain Sunday morning, there was only a “trace” of rain at Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport, where the National Weather Service takes official measurements.

“It was actually pretty localized,” said James Cuellar, a forecaster with the National Weather Service. “Just along and east of 235.”

The annual Frontiers in Flight airshow at McConnell Air Force Base was canceled Sunday due to damage caused by the morning storm.

Jabara Airport in East Wichita saw about 4/10 of an inch of rain, Cuellar said.

Here’s a look at places around Wichita and their rainfall totals Sunday:

    • Winfield: 0.22 inches

    • Derby: 0.9 inches
    • Bel Aire: 1.2 inches
    • Haysville: 1.65 inches

“The areas that saw the rain, because that’s where the storms are sitting, you probably got in the neighborhood of 1 to 2 inches of rain,” Cuellar said.

Before Sunday’s rainfall, the Wichita area saw a few days of morning rain last week.

“Probably the winners would be kind of near Derby, where they got close to 2 inches, and then north of the airport, where there was another pocket of near 2 inches, you know, 1.7 to 1.9,” Cuellar said.

Cuellar said there was an area in southern Wichita that reported 3 inches last week, but that was an outlier compared to everywhere else.

Currently, the city is about 6.6 inches below its normal precipitation at this point in the year.

Has this rain helped with Wichita’s drought?

Wichita is currently in phase 2 of its drought response, which restricts city water customers’ outdoor water use to once a week. The city moved into phase 2 earlier this month in response to low water levels at Cheney Reservoir.

While the city did experience rain last week, Cuellar said it wasn’t what we needed from a supply perspective.

“W e need the rain to fall over the Cheney Lake area, and unfortunately, we haven’t really seen a lot of that,” Cuellar said. “Most of the rain has been further east, so it’ll be good for the lawns ... and gardens outside and stuff like that.”

Cuellar said there is another chance of rain this Thursday night through Friday morning. A cold front is also expected to sweep through Wichita.

Here’s this week’s weather forecast, from the National Weather Service:

    • Tuesday: High around 96 and low near 71. Sunny.
    • Wednesday: High around 93 and low about 74. Sunny.
    • Thursday: High around 92 and and a low near 66. Chance of showers.
    • Friday: High around 83 and low around 62. Chance of showers before 1 p.m.
    • Saturday: High around 84 and low near 63. Sunny.
