Knights clip Burlington Christian 3-2 to reach NCISAA 2-A semis

Host Greenfield School pushed across a run in the bottom of the fourth inning that turned into a 3-2 win over Burlington Christian in the third round of the NCISAA 2-A baseball playoffs Saturday afternoon at Ralph Hodge Family Field.
Solid pitching carried the No. 2-seeded Knights to their seventh win in eight games as juniors Christopher Tankersley and Simon Quinn combined in the victory. Greenfield, now 15-5, will host No. Rocky Mount Academy (14-4) in Monday’s 2-A semifinals game. The Knights beat the Eagles 2-0 in a tournament at Faith Christian in Rocky Mount on April 2.
Greenfield had not, however, even faced unseeded Burlington Christian this season. The Royals (17-5-1) hammered No. 6 Wayne Christian 15-3 in the second round Thursday and took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning off Tankersley.
However, Greenfield answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame and the score stayed that way until the fourth.
Tankersley scattered eight hits and walked one while striking out three. Both runs he allowed in the first inning were earned.
Quinn pitched a 1-2-3 seventh for his seventh save.
Senior Quintin Blake had two of Greenfield’s five hits while also stealing two bases. Tankersley doubled in three at-bats with two runs scored and an RBI while Garrison Wester and Clark Johnson each had a hit and an RBI. Freshman Jaden Frazier drove in the other run.
J.D. Mace was 3 for 4 with a double to lead the Royals’ eight-hit attack.
