GOLDSBORO — Wilson Post 13 launched a busy, ambitious week of American Legion baseball with a 24-6 defeat of Moore County Post 12 that was halted after four innings Monday evening at C35 Sports Complex.

Wilson displayed a potent offense that was an upgrade from Friday’s 5-3 season-opening win over Game Time Prospects 17-U National team. Led by Hunt High senior Nick Worrell’s 4-for-4 showing, Post 13 racked up 11 hits to go with 13 bases on balls issued by three Moore County pitchers.

“I thought our approach was really good tonight,” said Wilson head coach Matt Ballance. “We laid off some bad pitches, but it did seem like whenever it came in the zone, we were ready to hit. Overall I’m fairly pleased with the offense output tonight, compared to Friday night, for sure.”

Wilson used two walks, two Post 12 errors and two hits, including a double by third baseman Brady Jenkins of Northern Nash to score six runs in the top of the first inning. Moore County responded with four runs, all earned, off Post 13 starting pitcher and North Johnston High junior Tyler Coates, who allowed two hits and walked three.

Mason Sasser of North Lenoir High got Wilson out of the inning and came back for two more innings, giving up two unearned runs on a hit and three walks while fanning three.

Daniel Edwards of Greenville Christian pitched a hitless fourth to wrap up the game for Wilson, which erupted for 14 runs in the third inning.

Worrell, who also scored four runs, swatted a pair of triples, while Jenkins doubled twice in two at-bats and drove in four runs. Catcher Seth Scott of North Johnston was 1 for 3 with a double and three RBIs while right fielder Peyton Clay collected five RBIs and scored three times. Shortstop J.D. Graziani of Brunswick Community College by way of Fike High was 1 for 3 with an RBI while left fielder Adyn Gooding doubled and drove in two runs.

Wilson is off Tuesday but then plays six games in six days, starting with perennial state championship contender Fuquay-Varina Post 116 Nationals visiting Fleming on Wednesday.

“Tonight was definitely the easiest game we’re gonna have this week,” Ballance said. “You’ve got a really good Garner team coming in who’s always in the state tournament, it seems every year. Always has a handful of really good talent. In order for us to win that ballgame, we’re going to have to show up in all seven innings of it.”

Post 13 hosts Area I East Division foes Ahoskie Post 102 on Thursday at Beddingfield High and Wayne County Post 11 on Friday at Fleming.

Post 13 then steps out of the area for a pair of weekend games, welcoming Wilmington Post 10 to Beddingfield on Saturday and Jacksonville Post 265 to Fleming on Sunday before returning to C35 Complex on Monday, June 3, for a rematch with Wayne County.

    Score by innings:

    Wilson 61(14) 3 — 24

    Moore Co. 420 0 — 6
