Authorities have charged a Wilson County man with supplying the fentanyl that caused a 33-year-old Tarboro woman’s overdose death.

Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Office detectives and patrol officers arrested Devonty Janell Pitt, 35, on Aug. 13. Deputies say he provided drugs to Cierra Lynn Parker Barnes, who died May 2.

“During this investigation by Detective R. Holloman, it was determined that Devonty Pitt was the individual who had supplied the toxic narcotics that led to the fatal overdose,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

Barnes is survived by her husband and has a brother and grandmother in Macclesfield, according to her obituary with Davis-Little Funerals & Cremations.

Pitt was charged with aggravated death by distribution through unlawful sale of certain controlled substances, a Class B1 felony that carries a presumptive sentence of 16-20 years in prison for offenders without prior criminal convictions.

“Devonty Pitt has had several previous possession with intent to sell and distribute charges for substances such as heroin and cocaine and is also a convicted felon due to these charges,” the release notes.

Deputies didn’t list a last-known address for Pitt. News accounts of a 2019 drug arrest indicate he then lived in the Elm City area.

Pitt was jailed without bond in the Edgecombe County Detention Center. He faces nine pending charges in other cases, according to online court records.

In Wilson County, Pitt is charged with felony possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine, felony possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana, felony possession of cocaine, misdemeanor contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile and separate felony and misdemeanor counts of maintaining a vehicle or dwelling for storage of a controlled substance.

In Edgecombe County, Pitt is charged with felony breaking or entering with intent to terrorize or injure, misdemeanor assault on a female and misdemeanor larceny of a motor vehicle.
