Host Bandon’s girls dominated the Valley Coast Conference (Class 2A District 3) championships on Saturday as the Tigers geared up to try to repeat as state champions.
Bandon scored 193 points, to more than double up runner-up Central Linn (81) in the 11-school district.
Marley Petrey led the way for the Tigers, winning four events, but Bandon also was victorious in seven more, winning 11 of the 17 events in all. Petrey won the 100 (13.07 seconds), 300 hurdles (46.99), long jump (4.97 meters) and triple jump (10.71) for the Tigers.
Analise Miller won the 800 (2:26.90) and 3,000 (11:21.10) and teamed with Giada Moore and teammates Makenna and Makiah Vierck to win the 4x400 relay in 4:21.21. Makiah Vierck won the 100 hurdles (17.41) and high jump (1.41 meters) while Moore took the 400 (1:03.76) and was second to Petrey in the 300 hurdles (49.44).
Makenna Vierck was second in the 200 (28.31) and 400 (1:04.66), advancing to state in those events.
Katelyn Senn won the javelin for Bandon (38.37 meters) with teammate Caitlyn Michalek second (37.16) and Michalek matched Makiah Vierck’s winning height in the high jump to give Bandon two state qualifiers in that event.
Bandon also finished second to Illinois Valley in the 4x100 relay (53.39), with the squad of Miller, Moore, Michalek and Makiah Vierck advancing to state.
And the Tigers got three wild-card entries to state for athletes among the best in Class 2A who had not already qualified — Makenna Vierck in the 100 and both Safaa Dimitruk and Lilly Iverson in the 800.
Reedsport’s girls had one state qualifier. Gracey Janiszewski won the discus (89-1).
Central Linn won a tight boys team race with 104 points, while Illinois Valley had 97, Monroe 96 and Oakland 80. Reedsport and Waldport tied for fifth with 62, followed by Gold Beach (50) and Bandon (48).
Reedsport’s Clayton Wilson won both distance races, taking the 1,500 in 4:17.14 and the 3,000 in 9:22.55. Teammate Thomas Morgan was second in the 200 (24.30), giving the Brave two state qualifiers. Myles Morgan advanced as a wild card selection in the discus for Reedsport.
Gold Beach won all three throws, with Korben Storns taking both the shot put (12.73 meters) and discus (152 feet, 5 inches. Nelson Wilstead won the javelin (177-3). The Panthers also got a wild-card berth in the 4x100 relay.
Bandon’s boys had two winners — Noah Brown in the pole vault (3.68 meters) and Raistlin Schippert in the high hurdles (16.93).
The state meet for Class 2A begins Thursday.
