(Alabama)- In a surprising and unfortunate discovery, a local Alabama resident recently took to social media after capturing an image of lemons rotting in the lemon bin at a nearby Walmart. The shocking sight has stirred conversation about the state of produce quality at the popular retail chain.

The resident, who goes by the Reddit name jayebird1012 (OP), visited the Lakeshore Walmart (Homewood) this week. While browsing the produce section, the OP noticed something amiss in the fruit section. Upon closer inspection, they found a batch of lemons sitting in a display that had clearly seen better days. The lemons were visibly discolored, shriveled, and in some cases, completely covered in mold.

The photo, shared on Reddit, quickly gained attention, with many users expressing their concerns and frustrations about the state of the store's produce. One user sarcastically remarked, "I didn’t know they made ‘in house’ penicillin," while another commented, "That’s why we purchase our produce at the farmers market or local grocery stores."

The image has sparked a broader discussion about the quality of produce in large retail chains like Walmart with some sharing personal experiences with the same Walmart store. One commenter said, "Lakeshore Walmart produce has been terrible since I’ve moved back. I lived there a few years ago, the Walmart was sketchy, but the food was usually fine. I moved back in April, and now you can’t even find an onion or tomato in good enough shape to eat." Another commenter said, "You are at the lakeshore Walmart. What did you possibly expect?"

In contrast, one commenter came to Walmart's defense by recommending the OP shop at a local Walmart Neighborhood Market rather than a Supercenter.

    Lifespan of a Lemon

US Citrus reported that the lifespan of a lemon depends on how it's stored. If left on the counter, it will last up to a week, though in hot weather or a warm home, it may only stay fresh for a few days.

Lemons kept in cooler, shaded areas can last around two weeks. However, if you store them in the refrigerator, lemons can remain fresh for up to four to six weeks.

    Yelp Reviews Are No Better

Sadly for this same Walmart, Alabama Yelp users have rated the location with 1.9 stars out of 5. Amanda left her comment under the store's page and said, "I would recommend not going to this WalMart location. This is not my usual WalMart store so I do not go often, but every time I have shopped here, I am approached by loiters in the parking lot who make comments towards me as I walk by or ask for money. She continued, "I do not feel safe at this location, and I will not go back. I think the store should monitor the parking lot because it is needed in this area. The store should provide a safe environment for shoppers and they should feel safe while there."
