(Alabama)- On August 15, 2024, the Alabama Department of Justice reported a former police officer was charged with participating in a scheme to plant drugs on innocent motorists to fabricate drug arrests.

Michael Kilgore, 40, of Centre, faces a charge of conspiracy to distribute controlled substances, specifically methamphetamine. The charge was filed in U.S. District Court, alongside a plea agreement in which Kilgore has agreed to plead guilty.

    The Scheme Unfolds

Court documents reveal that Kilgore's scheme began in January 2023. After stopping a car and discovering various drugs, Kilgore allegedly offered the driver a deal to avoid drug charges by collaborating with him. The driver agreed, becoming Kilgore's co-conspirator in the drug-planting plot.

Kilgore and his accomplice planned to frame innocent motorists by placing drugs on their vehicles. On January 31, 2023, they orchestrated a sham traffic stop, during which Kilgore "discovered" a package containing methamphetamine, oxycodone, and marijuana planted on the undercarriage of the targeted vehicle. The vehicle's driver and passenger were subsequently detained for drug possession.

    The Plot Unravels

Kilgore and his co-conspirator intended to carry out the scheme again. However, before the plan could proceed, the co-conspirator discarded the drugs and reported Kilgore's actions to law enforcement, leading to the investigation and charges.

    Legal Proceedings

A date will be set for Kilgore to formally enter his guilty plea. The case was investigated by the FBI, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Brett A. Janich leading the prosecution, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Kristen Osborne providing additional support.

It is important to note that the information filed contains charges that have not yet been proven in court. Kilgore is presumed innocent until proven guilty under Alabama's law.
