SCC hosting Agriculture Day on April 19
Surry Community College is hosting an Agriculture Day for local high schools students. The event will be held on April 19, from 9 a.m. to noon in the courtyard of the Dobson campus. Students and all community members are welcome. The event will include agricultural presentation for students, a petting zoo, and a cash-only plant sale. There will also be music, games, food, and giveaways for attendees. For more information about the event or to learn more about college agricultural programs, contact James Quick quickj@surry.edu. Any agricultural organizations or businesses interested in participating in the event may also contact Quick. Surry offers a diploma and certificate in applied animal science technology and a certificate in sustainable agriculture. Blue Ridge Music Hall of Fame induction ceremony held Saturday
The Wilkes Heritage Museum hosted the 16th Annual Blue Ridge Music Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Saturday, March 23. The musical history of the inducted icons was celebrated throughout the event. Cindy Baucom served as emcee and set the pace for the evening. In celebration of National Library Week (April 7 -13) the Northwest Regional Library System is hosting a Writers Road Show series of events featuring North Carolina author Marjorie Hudson. Drive-thru soup warms the soul on a windy day
After several warm days in early March, the temperature turned off cooler just in time for folks to be craving a comforting bowl of soup during the annual Empty Bowls fundraiser held March 19. Science alumni provide perspective to STEM career opportunities
Two Surry Community College science alumni will speak on their research and careers, giving perspective to potential STEM, or science, technology, engineering, and math, career opportunities. On Thursday, April 18, Jayne Willard, biologist with the National Park Service, will talk about her work on the collapse of the cottonwood tree and implications for wildlife populations in the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area in Minnesota. Winter Gary, executive director with the Highlands Biological Foundation, will speak on conservation work at the Highlands Biological Station in Highlands. Starmount students rewarded with pancake breakfast
Paul Frasher, principal at Starmount High School, loves having fun with his students. He believes that students should be rewarded for following the school rules, so the school and its MTSS team recently hosted a pancake breakfast to reward students who had fewer than five absences and no major discipline referrals during quarter three. “I believe that it encourages students to keep making good choices,” said Frasher. Starmount senior signs to wrestle at Averett University
Starmount senior wrestler and football player Johnatan “Ton” Argueta has signed his national letter of intent to wrestle at Averett University in Danville, Virginia. Argueta has wrestled and played football for the Rams all four years. He has been a standout in the heavyweight class both in the Northwest 1A conference and the Western 1A Region. In his senior season, he clenched his 100th career win finishing with 105 career wins, three-time state qualifier, and two-time state runner-up.
