Navigating the Waves: Washington's Ferry Woes Take Center Stage in Governor's Race

Washington's leading Democratic candidate for governor, Bob Ferguson, has proposed the construction of two diesel-powered ferries to address the challenges facing the state’s ferry system.

This plan aims to enhance the reliability of service amid frequent cancellations due to breakdowns of existing vessels. Additionally, Ferguson suggests elevating the head of ferries to a cabinet-level position to recruit and retain employees to alleviate labor shortages.

Democrat’s Proposal for Washington State Ferries

Ferguson's stance on diesel ferries, although aligning with Republican proposals, contradicts the state's goal of achieving an emission-free fleet by 2050.

While he acknowledges the need to electrify the fleet, Ferguson emphasizes the urgency of the current crisis and the importance of taking decisive action to ensure the transportation needs of island residents are met.

Hybrid-electric boats can be considered as an alternative, coupled with increased usage of passenger-only ferries until new vessels are obtained.

Responses from Lawmakers and Gubernatorial Candidates

Some Republican lawmakers criticized Ferguson for adopting their idea without prior engagement on the issue, suggesting a lack of support when needed.

Gubernatorial candidate Dave Reichert emphasized the need for clean, diesel-powered ferries, while the Democratic chair of the Senate Transportation Committee expressed confidence in the current approach to decarbonize the transportation system.

    Challenges and Future Prospects

Washington initiated the process of ferry electrification in 2019, but delays have hampered progress, with the first electric-hybrid vessel expected to arrive in 2028.

Costs and liability issues have further complicated the situation, prompting calls for urgent action to expedite the procurement of new vessels.

The focus remains on transitioning to a clean fleet while ensuring reliable service for ferry-dependent residents.
