Washington state legislators have passed a bill that would prohibit child marriages in the state.

The bill, known as House Bill 1455, aims to eliminate any marriage involving individuals under the age of 18. Under current laws, 17-year-olds in Washington can get married with parental consent, and those younger than 17 can marry if authorized by a superior court judge.

    Bill Progression and Reception

This bill, proposed by state Rep. Monica Jurado Stonier, had faced some delays in the Senate but was eventually reintroduced and passed both the House and the Senate with overwhelming approval.

The lone dissenting vote was cast by Sen. Jeff Holy. If signed into law by Governor Jay Inslee, this bill will take effect 90 days after the current legislative session adjourns.

Reasons for the Ban and Bill Supporters

Between 2000 and 2018, more than 4,800 minors aged 15 to 17 were married in Washington, with a significant proportion involving girls marrying much older men.

Reasons behind such marriages often included financial motives or to avoid legal issues. The bill has received immense support from various organizations such as the Latino Civic Alliance, the National Coalition to End Child Marriage, and others who aim to combat forced and early marriages.
