    Police name Trooper involved in Thompson shooting

    UPDATE: State Police identified the Trooper as Russel T. Peters, from Troop F . Peters has been a Trooper since September 2021.

    THOMPSON, N.Y. ( NEWS10 )– State Police and the Attorney General’s Office are investigating a trooper-involved shooting in Thompson on Tuesday. Troopers said the shooting happened at 2:20 a.m. when a man led police in a car chase on Rock Hill Drive.

    Troopers said Albert Melendez, 32, of Middletown, attempted to turn around during the chase at the intersection of Rock Hill Drive and Emerald Place. The trooper got out of his car, commanding Melendez to stop, but shot Melendez when his car drove forward and made contact with the trooper.

    Melendez was transported to Garnet Health Medical Center and died. The trooper was treated for minor injuries and released.
