A man under investigation for an overnight hit and run death on Thornton's 84th Avenue bridge last week has been charged with first-degree murder, according to a news release from the 17th Judicial District Attorney.

Mathew Lopez, 34, is accused of hitting pedestrian Rubin Aguilar Vasquez, 48, on purpose in the early morning of July 23 and fleeing.

After asking for the public's help in locating a red and tan Ford Expedition, Thornton police arrested Lopez that evening. Lopez, of Adams County, was booked into jail at around 8:30 pm July 23.

Lopez is in the Adams County jail on $750,000 bond.

Lopez' next court appearance is Sept. 26 in Adams County District Court.
