"Hoosiers" Bus Charms La Porte with Nostalgia
(La Porte, IN) - One of the featured attractions of this year’s parade was the iconic 1939 maroon school bus used in the movie Hoosiers. It was brought to town by Darryll Baker of Greenfield, who says the bus had an interesting life even before the movie. “We’ve had this thing in our family for 75 years,” Baker told HTNN before the parade. “It was a school bus for ten years, before my grandfather bought it,” he said. Baker’s grandfather Jack found it in a junkyard near Crawfordsville. “Then for 36 years it was an RV for us, when I was a kid.” Baker said his grandfather outfitted the bus with a couch, bed, stove, and icebox, and the family toured the country. “My dad and grandfather went everywhere in this thing— 39 states, my grandfather said.”

MDOT uses a Model T to audit roads in Amish, Mennonite communities. Here's why.
(CBS DETROIT) - The Michigan Department of Transportation shared a YouTube video on Wednesday showing how it uses a Ford Model T to inspect state roads in Amish and Mennonite communities. In the video, MDOT audited M-91 in Montcalm County, where the department will add more pavement width on the shoulder to accommodate the horses pulling buggies. In a social media post, MDOT said the vehicle is used "to see first-hand how horse-drawn buggies experience that roads and shoulders, working to ensure safety."According to a study by Elizabeth College, Michigan had the sixth-largest Amish population in 2023, estimated to be 18,445 people."If you're riding in a Model T, you're going to have about the same experience on the shoulder of the road that you would if you're riding in an Amish buggy," Del Kirby, MDOT Transporation Service Centers manager in the Grand Region, said in the video. "So this is a way for us to kind of go out and do a road audit on shoulders, showing that experience that the Amish have with different road and shoulder configurations without ever having to impose on the Amish or putting staff in jeopardy."

Michigan education advocates want to see a supplemental budget to increase funding
(CBS DETROIT) - One education advocacy group says Michigan's school budget for the next fiscal year is missing some funding. The $83 billion state budget for the next fiscal year includes about a $400 increase in per-student funding for schools and expansions to programs that allow residents to continue their education well into adulthood. But the Michigan Education Association says it feels the legislature has more work to do to support learning in our state. "The categorical funding for students mental health and school safety was reduced in this year's budget," said MEA spokesperson Thomas Morgan. "We are looking to pass a...
