NWS Issues Hazardous Weather Outlook for Lake Erie, Lake Huron, and Lake St. Clair

Detroit, MI The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for the waters of Lake Erie, Lake Huron, and Lake St. Clair, effective today through the weekend. The outlook warns of the potential for strong to severe thunderstorms, particularly during the afternoon and evening hours.

    Today's Weather Risks

The NWS forecasts scattered thunderstorms mainly between 3 PM and 10 PM EDT today. Some storms may reach severe levels, with wind gusts of up to 50 knots being the primary threat. The storm mode is expected to be multicell clusters, moving from west-northwest to east-southeast at 20 knots. Mariners and those on or near the water are advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.

    Extended Outlook: More Storms Possible

The hazardous weather outlook continues into Thursday, with additional scattered thunderstorms expected into Thursday night. The risk of strong to severe storms persists, with wind gusts again potentially reaching 50 knots. Further thunderstorms are also possible on Friday and Saturday, raising concerns for boating and outdoor activities in the region.

    Safety Recommendations

While spotter activation is not anticipated, the NWS urges all individuals on or near the Great Lakes to stay informed and monitor weather conditions closely. Mariners should be particularly cautious and consider delaying or altering plans if severe weather approaches. It is crucial to secure vessels and be prepared for sudden changes in weather conditions.
