    Bad Axe City Council Approves Key Initiatives at August Meeting - No To Pot, Yes To Pickle Ball

    Bad Axe, MI - August 5, 2024 – The Bad Axe City Council convened on Monday for its regular meeting, with several key issues on the agenda. Mayor Kathleen Particka called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m., with all council members present.

    Cannabis Ordinance Rejection Sparks Public Discontent

    The meeting opened with public comments, highlighted by a statement from Justin Dunaskiss of Oxford, MI. He expressed his disappointment over the Council's recent decision to turn down the proposed Cannabis Ordinance. Dunaskiss criticized the Council for rejecting the ordinance, indicating a growing frustration among certain community members.

    Pickleball Courts to Be Developed

    The Council made strides in enhancing local recreational facilities by approving a motion to seek estimates for the construction of permanent pickleball courts. The decision passed unanimously, reflecting the Council's support for expanding sports infrastructure in Bad Axe.

    Charitable Gaming License Approved

    In other business, the Council approved Resolution #2024-12, granting a Charitable Gaming License to A Redeeming Dawn Co., a local nonprofit organization. The motion received unanimous support from the Council.

    City Hall Maintenance Moves Forward

    The Council addressed several maintenance issues at City Hall. Firstly, they approved a $2,350 expenditure to replace a flagpole knocked over by a semi-truck trailer in the spring. The contract was awarded to Doug Nichols.

    Additionally, the Council approved a $22,121 project to replace the front windows of City Hall, with the work to be carried out by Chad Roggenbuck Construction. Notably, Mayor Particka abstained from voting on this motion, while the rest of the Council voted in favor.

    Financial Matters

    The Council approved the payment of bills totaling $260,291.63 for invoices dated July 18 and July 26, 2024. The motion passed without opposition.

    Miscellaneous Council Discussions

    During the meeting, Council Member Glaza raised a query regarding whether the town's elevator required a blinking light and who would be responsible for installing it. Council Member Rapson and Clerk Zagorski both reminded citizens to participate in the upcoming Primary Election on August 6. Additionally, Mayor Particka congratulated local children who participated in the Huron County Fair.

    The meeting was adjourned at 6:45 p.m., following a motion by Mayor Particka, seconded by Council Member Rochefort, which passed with unanimous approval.
