Flood Advisory Issued for Southeast North Dakota as Heavy Rain Continues

Bismarck, ND – August 15, 2024North Dakota residents should prepare for dense fog overnight and into Thursday morning, as well as ongoing flooding in parts of the southeast, according to a Hazardous Weather Outlook and Flood Advisory issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Bismarck. Dense Fog Expected Overnight

Areas of dense fog are expected to develop overnight across portions of north central, northwest, and southeast North Dakota, according to the NWS. This fog may reduce visibility and could linger into the early hours of Thursday morning, making travel hazardous for drivers. Residents are encouraged to exercise caution, especially during the morning commute when visibility could be significantly impacted.

The fog advisory covers regions including Bottineau, Ward, and Burleigh counties, where visibility may be reduced to dangerous levels in some areas. The NWS urges motorists to take extra care when driving through foggy conditions.

Flood Advisory Issued for Dickey and LaMoure Counties

In addition to the fog threat, a Flood Advisory has been issued for Dickey and LaMoure counties in southeast North Dakota. Heavy rainfall from thunderstorms has resulted in minor flooding across low-lying and poor drainage areas, with up to 4 inches of rain already reported. The advisory is in effect until 10:15 PM CDT Thursday, as additional rainfall of up to 1 inch is expected to exacerbate the flooding overnight.

According to the NWS, emergency management teams have reported flooding in several areas, including Ellendale, LaMoure, and Fullerton. Water over roadways and potential impassable low-water crossings are among the primary concerns.

    Precautionary Measures and Safety Tips

Residents in flood-prone areas should avoid driving on flooded roads and be mindful of nighttime conditions, which can make it harder to recognize flood hazards. The NWS emphasizes the importance of the safety slogan, "Turn around, don’t drown," as most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles.

The current flood conditions are expected to persist into Thursday, with minor flooding anticipated to continue until rain subsides and water levels recede.
