Locally Heavy Rainfall Could Lead to Flooding, Damaging Winds, and Large Hail Possible Friday

Cleveland, OH – August 14, 2024The National Weather Service (NWS) in Cleveland has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for regions across Lake Erie, north central Ohio, northeast Ohio, northwest Ohio, and northwest Pennsylvania. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop on Friday and extend into Saturday, bringing a significant risk of heavy rainfall and the potential for flooding.

Heavy Rainfall to Hit Friday into Saturday

Showers and thunderstorms are expected to move across the region beginning Friday, with the possibility of locally heavy rainfall that could trigger flooding in low-lying and urban areas. The NWS warns that areas already saturated from previous rains over the past week are especially at risk for flooding.

“Locally heavy rainfall may lead to flooding,” the NWS warns, adding that residents should be particularly mindful of flooding in urban areas and regions that have already experienced heavy precipitation.

    Severe Storms Possible Friday

In addition to the risk of flooding, strong to severe thunderstorms could develop on Friday, potentially producing isolated damaging wind gusts and large hail. While these storms are not guaranteed to reach severe levels, the potential for isolated severe weather remains a concern.

Regions around Cuyahoga, Lorain, and Erie counties, as well as areas along Lake Erie, should remain alert for rapidly changing conditions as the storms move in. The NWS encourages residents to stay informed and take necessary precautions as the system progresses.

    No Spotter Activation Expected

While the risk of severe weather and flooding exists, the NWS has not called for spotter activation at this time. However, weather officials continue to monitor the situation closely, and updates will be provided if conditions worsen.

    Safety Precautions

As the storms approach, residents should take steps to prepare for possible flooding and severe weather, particularly if living in flood-prone areas or locations that have recently experienced heavy rainfall. Keeping an eye on weather alerts and avoiding travel through flooded areas will help ensure safety.
