Strong Thunderstorms and Heavy Rain to Hit Upper and Lower Northern Michigan Through the Weekend

Gaylord, MI – August 15, 2024Residents across Eastern Upper Michigan and Northern Lower Michigan should prepare for the possibility of non-severe thunderstorms tonight, with the potential for stronger storms and locally heavy rainfall developing by Friday afternoon and continuing into the weekend, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Gaylord.

Thunderstorms Tonight for Northern Lower Michigan

Thunderstorms are expected to develop tonight, particularly west of I-75 in northern lower Michigan. While these storms are not expected to reach severe levels, they could bring rain, lightning, and gusty winds that could create hazardous conditions, particularly during nighttime hours when visibility is reduced.

Counties such as Emmet, Leelanau, and Otsego are among the regions that could experience storms during the evening and overnight hours. The NWS encourages residents to stay alert to changing weather conditions.

Strong Storms and Heavy Rainfall Possible Friday

Looking ahead to Friday, the threat of thunderstorms will increase, with the potential for strong storms to develop in the afternoon and evening. These storms could bring locally heavy rainfall, raising concerns for isolated flooding in some areas.

While spotter activation is not expected, residents should remain vigilant, particularly if living in areas prone to flooding. The combination of strong thunderstorms and significant rainfall could lead to ponding on roadways and temporary flooding in low-lying areas.

The areas most likely to be impacted include counties such as Alpena, Roscommon, and Mackinac Island and its surrounding areas.

Storm Activity Continues into the Weekend

The storm threat will extend into Saturday, with the possibility of additional thunderstorms across the region. While no widespread severe weather is expected, these storms could bring periods of heavy rain and isolated strong storms through the first part of the weekend.

    Stay Weather Aware

As the weekend approaches, it’s important for residents and visitors in Northern Michigan to stay informed of local weather updates. Thunderstorms and heavy rainfall can develop rapidly, especially during the summer months, and preparing for the potential of changing conditions will help ensure safety.
