Storms to Hit Friday and Saturday: Risk of Heavy Rain and Strong Thunderstorms

Charleston, WV – August 15, 2024Residents across northeast Kentucky, southeast Ohio, southwest Virginia, and much of West Virginia should prepare for strong thunderstorms and heavy rain beginning Friday and continuing into Saturday, according to a Hazardous Weather Outlook issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Charleston.

Strong Thunderstorms Expected Friday and Saturday

The NWS has forecasted a significant chance of strong thunderstorms for Friday and Saturday, with the primary risk occurring during the afternoon and evening hours. The storms could bring heavy rainfall, which may lead to localized flooding in low-lying areas, and the potential for strong winds.

Residents in regions such as Cabell, Kanawha, Wood, and Jackson WV counties should stay informed about developing weather conditions, as storms could arrive rapidly and with significant intensity. Southeast Ohio and southwest Virginia, including Gallia, Athens, and Buchanan counties, could also see impacts from these storm systems.

    Heavy Rain and Flooding Possible

In addition to the risk of strong thunderstorms, heavy rain could create flooding hazards, especially in areas that have already experienced recent rainfall. Flash flooding in urban areas and small streams may occur, so residents are encouraged to monitor local weather alerts and avoid traveling through flooded roads if flooding develops.

The NWS emphasizes the importance of being cautious when heavy rain moves in, as flooded roadways can pose serious dangers, especially during the nighttime when visibility is reduced.

    Spotter Activation Not Expected

While spotter activation is not anticipated at this time, residents should remain aware of weather updates and take the necessary precautions during periods of severe weather. The NWS will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as conditions evolve.

    Prepare for Stormy Weather

As the storm system approaches, residents in the affected areas are advised to stay informed of any developments and ensure they have a plan in place should severe weather or flooding occur. Being weather-aware during periods of heavy rainfall and strong thunderstorms is essential for maintaining safety and preventing storm-related accidents.
