Isolated Thunderstorms and Heavy Rainfall Expected
Residents in northern Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin should prepare for isolated thunderstorms this afternoon and into the early evening. While the storms are not expected to be severe, localized heavy rainfall could occur, particularly in low-lying areas. Motorists and residents in flood-prone zones should remain cautious and monitor weather updates as conditions could change rapidly.
The NWS has stated that Skywarn spotter activation is not anticipated today or tonight, but residents are encouraged to stay alert to sudden weather shifts.
Near-Surface Smoke Impacting Sensitive Groups
In addition to thunderstorms, the region is currently under an Air Quality Alert issued by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency. The alert is in effect until noon on Monday, with air quality expected to reach levels categorized as “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups.” This includes people with lung and heart conditions, as well as children and older adults.
Air Quality Degradation Due to Wildfire Smoke
Heavy ground-level smoke from wildfires has been moving into northern Minnesota and is expected to continue affecting the area until Monday. Northerly winds have been pulling the smoke south, particularly impacting regions near Lake Superior. The air quality may fluctuate, with temporary improvements during the afternoon hours, but conditions are expected to degrade again overnight.
Areas immediately surrounding Lake Superior may see even worse air quality due to smoke becoming trapped in marine fog, worsening conditions beyond what is seen inland.
Health Precautions and Recommendations
Sensitive groups, including those with lung disease, heart disease, children, and the elderly, are advised to limit prolonged or heavy outdoor exertion. Officials recommend keeping windows closed overnight to prevent smoke from entering homes and reducing outdoor activities that contribute to air pollution. This includes limiting vehicle use and outdoor burning.
